To be Galapagos or not to be

Japanese products, in most cases, mobile phones, have rich functions which cannot be seen in other countries. On one hand, this feature is considered a great advantage, but this is not acceptable in the sense that it is not a major stream in the world standard. Thus, many people criticize this trend by using an expression "Japan is Galapagos."
But, I believe one reason for success of Japanese products was a huge domestic market. Finnish companies cannot conduct the same policy in Finland; the Finnish market is too small. They need to go abroad.

Those who are criticizing are using Japanese language to point out the issue. Then, why don't we use English instead of Japanese domestic language even in IEICE and IPSJ ?

I like Galapagos.

  1. Many Japanese vendors mentioned that they have contributed a lot to global standardization activities but I think in many situations they just followed one major Japanese operator. They did not have any global strategies of their own. mo.
